Continental 4x4 Contact SSR review
What is it?
The Continental 4x4 Contact SSR (SSR = Self Supporting Runflat) is an all season tire designed for light trucks and SUV's. Features a low profile for larger diameter wheels.
Strengths and weaknesses?
The 4x4 Contact SSR provides decent dry traction and steering response/feedback. Unfortunately, the positive characteristics end there.
While marketed as a true all season crossover and SUV tire, its wintry condition capabilities are really short of adequate.
Wet condition performance is decent, but far shy of the high standard set within and throughout the crossover/SUV touring all season tire category.
Treadlife is worst in class.
Expect more road noise with this 4x4 Contact SSR (run flat) version.
How does it compare?
Direct comparative data is lacking, but the non-run flat counterpart to the 4x4 Contact SSR, the standard 4x4 Contact, ranked dead last in the group of crossover/SUV touring tires per user feedback.
The 4x4 Contact is simply past its time and outgunned by current category tires on both performance and value.
- Treadlife Warranty: None
- Uniformity Warranty: 1 year, first 2/32" of wear
Anything else to know?
Only one 19" size remaining, and it's absurdly expensive.
If you must have a run flat, consider the Pirelli Scorpion Verde All Season run flat. Much less expensive, and an overall good tire through four seasons.
If you can bypass the run flat technology, then the world is your oyster. Start with the Continental CrossContact LX with EcoPlus Technology and go from there.
