Continental ContiProContact SSR review
What is it?
The Continental ContiProContact SSR (SSR = Self Supporting Runflat) is a grand touring all season tire designed for original equipment use on sporty coupes and sedans such as MINI Coopers and the BMW 3-series.
ContiProContact SSR strengths and weaknesses?
The ContiProContact SSR delivers about average dry and wet traction for the category.
Like its non-run flat counterpart, the Continental ContiProContact, ContiProContact SSR winter condition performance is lacking. Continental makes some excellent all season tires for snow (see the ExtremeContact DWS 06), but in our experience the ContiProContact SSR isn't one of them.
The ContiProContact SSR has also not avoided the comfort problems that were common to previous generation run flat tires. Road noise in particular is high as the miles add up.
Treadlife is below average despite the generous treadlife warranty. (Treadwear grade is just 400.) We witnessed the ContiProContact SSR last just 30,000 relatively easy miles on a BMW 3-Series.
How does the ContiProContact SSR compare?
Poor winter capability, below average ride quality, high road noise, and limited treadlife combine to give the ContiProContact SSR a lower tier user ranking in the grand touring all season run flat tire category.
Unfortunately, the ContiProContact SSR fits the mold of a sub-par original equipment tire, and one that cannot compete with numerous replacement tire options in the category (see below).
Anything else to know?
The Bridgestone Driveguard is a problem for the ContiProContact from both performance and price perspectives. We do not recommend the ContiProContact SSR as your all season run flat solution.
Don't require runflat technology? The class leading Pirelli Cinturato P7 All Season Plus and Michelin Premier A/S can both be had for about 25% less than the ContiProContact SSR.
Mild winter in your neck of the woods? The excellent Kumho Solus TA71 is literally less than half the cost of the ContiProContact SSR (17" size).
