Dunlop SP Sport 5000M DSST CTT review
What is it?
The Dunlop SP Sport 5000M DSST CTT (DSST=Dunlop Self-Supporting Technology) is an ultra high performance all season tire designed for performance-oriented coupes and sedans, sport trucks, and even sports cars that see year-round use. Served as the original equipment tire for certain Infiniti Q50 sports sedan.
The SP Sport 5000M DSST CTT features run flat technology.
Strengths and weaknesses?
The "SP Sport 5000" series from Dunlop has been met with widespread user dissatisfaction. The SP Sport 5000M DSST CTT doesn't break the mold, but there is some data to suggest that its dry and wet performance characteristics are superior to the associated models.
But whatever the tire gains from dry and wet condition capabilities is offset by lackluster winter/snow performance and comfort characteristics, according to user data. And not surprisingly, the incorporation of previous generation run flat technology has reportedly worsened ride quality and resulted in higher road noise. Lastly, treadlife may be very limited.
How does the SP Sport 5000M DSST CTT compare?
The SP Sport 5000M DSST CTT ranks dead last in the ultra high performance all season run flat category per user feedback.
Anything else to know?
At almost $400 per tire, you'd have to be on something... We don't mean to be unkind, but this is a thoroughly poor option in a tire category with more than one standout.
If run flat convenience/security is a must, check out the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus ZP at about $100 less per tire. Willing to forego run flat technology? Then direct your attention to the class leading Continental ExtremeContact DWS (and Continental ExtremeContact DWS 06) at under half the price of the SP Sport 5000M DSST CTT in OE sizing.
