Dunlop SP Sport 600 review
What is it?
The Dunlop SP Sport 600 is an extreme performance summer tire originally engineered for original equipment use on the Subaru WRX STI.
Despite its selection as an OE Subaru tire, the SP Sport 600 is not intended to be used year-round, off-road, or in anything close to true winter temperatures and conditions.
Strengths and weaknesses?
Excellent dry traction and handling characteristics.
Data suggests that the SP Sport 600 is a true compromise in the wet, and when it comes to everyday comfort. High road noise, hard ride, and very limited treadlife.
How does the SP Sport 600 compare?
Direct comparison data is lacking. Overall characteristics very much resemble the Direzza ZII Star Spec.
Anything else to know?
The fitting of the SP Sport 600 as an OE tire on an awd Subaru deserves recognition as a modern triumph of engineering and performance over legal liability concerns... We would have loved to have been a fly on the wall for those discussions.
But seriously, the WRX STI is an everyday car for most, and the SP Sport 600 does a relatively poor job as an everyday tire for the reasons cited above.
Should you desire an extreme performance summer replacement tire, you'll get superior performance and much improved civility from the Bridgestone Potenza RE-11. And you'll pay about $60 less per tire for the Bridgestones.
Drop "down" to a max performance summer tire for even more civility and as much summer street performance as once should need. The Continental ExtremeContact DW and Michelin Pilot Super Sport are excellent options.
