Dunlop SP Sport Maxx GT review
What is it?
The Dunlop SP Sport Maxx GT is a max performance summer tire designed for performance-oriented coupes, sedans, and sports cars. The SP Sport Maxx is engineered with a focus on dry and wet traction, as well as driver feedback and enjoyable handling characteristics.
Strengths and weaknesses?
Above average dry and wet condition capabilities for the category.
Comfort characteristics have been improved with this iteration of the "SP Sport Maxx" tire, and so too has treadlife, though probably not to a substantial degree.
How does it compare?
The SP Sport Maxx is arguably the best overall max performance summer tire currently on offer from Dunlop (also see the Sport Maxx RT), but it's still just shy of the top tier options in the category. Not quite enough outright performance in any condition, and still there remains a question of treadlife/value.
- Treadlife Warranty: None
- Uniformity Warranty: 1 year, first 2/32" of wear
Anything else to know?
We say that despite the qualitative improvements, the SP Sport Maxx GT is unfortunately still just too expensive...
The SP Sport Maxx GT is up a tier on its contemporaries when it comes to price, but not when it comes to performance, comfort, treadlife, or any other evaluative metric.
How much more expensive? In size 235/40R18 the SP Sport Maxx GT is (approximately):
- $80 more per tire than the exceptional Continental ExtremeContact DW
- $50 more per tire than the class leading Michelin Pilot Super Sport
- $80 more than the outstanding Bridgestone Potenza S-04 Pole Position
On the basis of performance and value, we suggest that you consider alternative max performance summer tire options.
