Dunlop SP Sport Maxx review
What is it?
The Dunlop SP Sport Maxx is a max performance summer tire designed for performance-oriented coupes, sedans, and sports cars. The SP Sport Maxx is engineered with an emphasis on both dry and wet road performance.
Strengths and weaknesses?
Above average dry and wet traction for a max performance summer tire, as well as good comfort characteristics -- ride quality and road noise.
Treadlife is not a strong point, and the road noise reportedly increases as the miles add up.
How does the SP Sport Maxx compare?
In the highly competitive max performance summer tire category, the SP Sport Maxx ranks eleventh out of twenty-seven tires per user feedback. The fact that the SP Sport Maxx has managed to maintain a mid-pack ranking is remarkable considering its age, and the advancement of the summer performance tire category as a whole in recent times.
In 2004 comparison testing, the SP Sport Maxx bested contemporaries from Continental and Pirelli in overall evaluation scoring.
Nevertheless, there is no doubt that the SP Sport Maxx has fallen behind this latest batch of standout summer performance options (see below).
Anything else to know?
Some users report a tendency for the SP Sport Maxx to develop flat spots even after limited garage time.
Large diameter sizes only -- 19", 20", and 21".
The SP Sport Maxx GT is a superior tire from Dunlop for equal money. So too is the Michelin Pilot Super Sport (by a country mile...), and again, for essentially equal money.
The Continental ExtremeContact DW is one of our favorites, and also certainly worthy of consideration.
