Firestone Firehawk Wide Oval RFT review
What is it?
The Firestone Firehawk Wide Oval RFT is an ultra high performance tire engineered for original equipment use on the C6 Corvette. Features run flat technology.
Strengths and weaknesses?
Much like the non-run flat summer tire alternative, the Firestone Firehawk Wide Oval Indy 500, the Firehawk Wide Oval RFT delivers across all evaluative metrics.
Dry condition performance and handling rivals the very best non-run flat ultra high performance summer tires, and wet condition capabilities are right there as well. Firestone have also managed to engineer comfort and treadlife into this run flat option, which is a rarity.
How does the Firehawk Wide Oval RFT compare?
Stipulate ultra high performance summer tire with run flat technology, and it doesn’t get any better than the Firehawk Wide Oval RFT. No other run flat alternative in the category keeps pace.
Anything else to know?
Limited 18” and 19” sizes due to the intended OE application.
The incorporation of run flat technology often wreaks havoc on a tire’s appeal, especially from a comfort and user satisfaction perspective (see the competing Dunlop SP Sport 01 DSST RunOnFlat). But that has not been the case with the Firehawk Wide Oval RFT, which has achieved an optimum blend of admirable performance, run flat convenience and security, and comfort.
You’ll garner superior performance from max performance summer alternatives, but those including run flat technology cost notably more. For example, the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 ZP is over $600 more per set in OE sizes.
The Firehawk Wide Oval RFT is definitely getting a bit long in the tooth, but taking price and run flat technology into consideration we’re not sure there is a superior current alternative.
Willing to forego the run flat feature? Have a look at the excellent BF Goodrich g-Force Sport COMP-2.
