Goodyear Excellence review
What is it?
The Goodyear Excellence is a grand touring summer tire designed for luxury coupes and sedans. The Excellence is engineered to provide solid performance and traction in both dry and wet conditions, as well as exceptional comfort characteristics.
Strengths and weaknesses?
Sufficient traction in both dry and wet conditions. The Excellence is no sport tire, but that's not the intention.
Ride comfort is high, but data indicates that road noise could be improved (reduced). Somewhat limited treadlife for a grand touring summer tire.
How does the Excellence compare?
Direct comparison data is lacking. As one of the very few modern introductions to the grand touring summer tire category, the Excellence keeps pace with the category standard. That's not saying much though... expect Bridgestone Turanza ER30-like characteristics and performance.
Data suggests that on overall comfort and treadlife, the Excellence falls short of the class leading Michelin Primacy HP.
Really though, we'd suggest a different tire category direction altogether -- see below.
Anything else to know?
Only 18" and 20" Excellence sizes currently available, and inventory is limited.
The Excellence is costly, and we'd suggest that the performance/comfort:dollar/value ratio is off.
If your tire sizing permits, consider jumping up to an unquestionably superior ultra high performance summer option like the Firestone Firehawk Wide Oval Indy 500, Bridgestone Potenza RE760 Sport, or BF Goodrich g-Force Sport COMP-2. These options give you some additional handling and performance without sacrificing much, if anything in the comfort department.
