Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 review
What is it?
The Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 is a max performance summer tire designed for performance coupes, sedans, and sports cars. Served as the original equipment tire for the E9X series BMW M3, the BMW Alpina Z8, and certain model Porsche 911 vehicles.
The Pilot Sport PS2 is the predecessor to the category-leading, and more current Michelin Pilot Super Sport.
Strengths and weaknesses?
Excellent dry traction and handling characteristics, as well as commendable rain performance.
Comfort characteristics are satisfactory with good ride quality and low road noise as compared to category alternatives.
Treadlife is above average for this class of tire.
How does the Pilot Sport PS2 compare?
Tire Rack users rank the Pilot Sport PS2 second out of thirty max performance summer tires.
In 2010 Tire Rack comparison testing, the Pilot Sport PS2 finished third overall just behind the Continental ExtremeContact DW and Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric. In testing, the Pilot Sport PS2 was recognized for its responsive handling and stability. However, it lacked some of the outright grip and performance in wet conditions as compared to other test subjects.
Anything else to know?
The Pilot Sport PS2 remains an excellent max performance summer tire, but the latest and greatest Michelin is that much better.
The class leading Michelin Pilot Super Sport is actually less expensive than the Pilot Sport PS2, and it offers unquestionably superior performance and longevity. Even the Pilot Super Sport treadlife warranty is better.
The Continental ExtremeContact DW is also worthy of consideration given its excellent all-around performance, and affordability relative to the Michelin options. Same for the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3.
