But with only 15 manufactured, and at a price of about $2M, the automotive world has moved on... and that's a bit of a shame. The Zonda R is one of the ultimate examples of what can occur when virtuoso auto designers and engineers (like Horacio Pagani) are unencumbered by regulations.
The Zonda R produced 740 screaming hp from its naturally aspirated AMG V12, but that figure cannot be fully appreciated without taking into consideration the Zonda R's weight -- only 2,300 lbs. To put that into perspective, the 991 Porsche GT3 weighs about 3,200 lbs. The Ferrari F12berlinetta nearly matches the Zonda R on power with 731 hp, but weighs some 1,300 lbs. (56%) more.
Combined with its optimized aero properties and widened track, the Zonda R was a properly rapid track car as Tiff determined in the video below. And the Zonda R's performance clout was firmly established when it lapped the Nurburgring in 6 minutes and 47 seconds, which is about 10 seconds faster than the Porsche 918 Spyder.
So some 5 years later we're still in love with the Zonda R.
And we're thankful that the limited production didn't stop them from making one hell of a Zonda R promo vid...
