Yokohama AVID Ascend (H- or V-Speed Rated) review
What is it?
The Yokohama AVID Ascend (H- or V-Speed Rated) is a grand touring all season tire designed for coupes, sedans, minivans and crossover vehicles.
The AVID Ascend aims to provide four season capability with satisfying comfort characteristics, low rolling resistance (resulting in greater fuel efficiency), and long treadlife.
Strengths and weaknesses?
Dry grip, handling and performance is a strong point, and wet condition traction is above average for the category as well, according to Tire Rack user feedback.
AVID Ascend comfort characteristics are a positive, with good ride quality and low road noise.
As with other Yokohama all season tires like the Yokohama ADVAN S.4., the AVID Ascend fails to stand up to more serious winter conditions. While light snow traction is adequate, deep snow and ice performance is deficient according to most standards.
How does the AVID Ascend compare?
Despite the snow/winter performance shortcomings, the AVID Ascend is a relatively well ranked grand touring all season tire, and registers twelfth out of thirty-eight grand touring all season tires per Tire Rack user feedback.
In 2012 Tire Rack comparison testing, the AVID Ascend displayed decent snow performance attributes as compared to the competition (contrary to user reports), but lacked wet condition grip. Overall, the AVID Ascend couldn't quite match modern top tier competition like the Continental PureContact with EcoPlus Technology and Michelin Primacy MXV4.
Anything else to know?
While treadlife is strong, it's noteworthy that AVID Ascend treadlife warranty is on par with top category alternatives.
All things considered though, we suggest you consider alternatives to the Yokohama AVID Ascend...
The General Tire AltiMAX RT43 (H- or V-Speed Rated) remains the exceptional value of the grand touring all season tire group with performance that is superior to the AVID Ascend (H- or V-Speed Rated); plus the General option offers greater initial affordability. The Kumho Solus TA71 is another economical option with very commendable performance attributes.
For legitimate all season performance that includes run flat technology, consider the superb Bridgestone DriveGuard.
While it wouldn't be our first option in the category, the AVID Ascend offers above average performance for a fair price, and is probably worthy of consideration. Just make sure to shop around first, and certainly temper expectations, or pull out the snow tires when true winter hits.
