Continental ContiSportContact 5 SSR SUV review
What is it?
The Continental ContiSportContact 5 SSR SUV is a street/sport truck summer tire originally engineered for BMW crossover vehicles. Features run flat technology (SSR = Self Supporting Runflat).
Can be fitted to both performance-oriented SUV's and some luxury cars.
Strengths and weaknesses?
The ContiSportContact 5 SSR SUV was designed with cornering stability and braking performance (wet & dry) as highest priorities. The tire also aims for high efficiency and fuel economy, and long treadlife.
How does the ContiSportContact 5 SSR SUV compare?
Direct comparison data is lacking, but the ContiSportContact 5 SSR SUV has fared well in overseas European testing.
Anything else to know?
Limited sizes range from 18" to 20", and they're costly. You'll pay a hefty premium for the run flat technology. For example, in size 255/55R18 the ContiSportContact 5 SSR SUV is about $90 more per tire than the non-run flat ContiSportContact 5 SUV.
In general, the ContiSportContact 5 tire lineup from Continental is receiving mixed user reviews.
Both the Hankook Ventus ST RH06 and General Tire Grabber UHP are more tried and tested options within the category, and are worthy of consideration. (Note no run-flat technology with these options.)
Remember that just because it fits on an SUV or truck doesn't mean that it will capably get you through a northern winter. Don't try it.
