Continental ProContact GX SSR review
What is it?
The Continental ProContact GX SSR (SSR = Self Supporting Runflat) is a grand touring all season tire designed for luxury coupes and sedans with some sporty characteristics.
Continental ProContact GX SSR strengths and weaknesses?
As the run flat version of the standard ProContact GX we know that performance characteristics will be somewhat consistent, so based upon available data, expect relatively underwhelming performance across the board.
Data suggests that ProContact GX dry and wet traction is adequate, while snow/winter performance is poor.
The ProContact GX doesn't rate particularly well in terms of comfort characteristics, and the run flat technology of the ProContact GX SSR will only worsen that situation, if anything.
How does the ProContact GX SSR compare?
The standard ProContact GX has not been well received by users. Unfortunately, at this time we don't think there's much hope for the ProContact GX SSR either. Combine run flat technology with a below average tire, and we fail to see the excellence potential.
Positive feedback, and high user satisfaction appears to be the exception, not the rule when it comes to the ProcContact GX SSR. Over at TireBuyer.com, for example, users rate the ProContact GX 2.4 out of 5. Ouch...
Anything else to know?
The current #1 ranked tire in the grand touring all season run flat category, the Bridgestone Driveguard, can be had for notably less than the ProContact GX SSR. Like the ProContact GX SSR, the DriveGuard features run flat technology.
Looking for an even more budget-friendly option? The Kumho Solus TA71 is worth a look as well, but you'll sacrifice the run flat technology.
Need true all season capability? Have a look at the excellent Michelin Premier A/S.
Continental manufactures some truly exceptional all season tires, but in our opinion the ProContact GX SSR isn't one of them. Exploring ProContact GX SSR alternatives before purchasing would be a wise move.
