Dunlop SP Sport Maxx GT DSST review
What is it?
The Dunlop SP Sport Maxx GT DSST (DSST=Dunlop Self-Supporting Technology) is a max performance summer tire designed for performance-oriented coupes, sedans, and sports cars. The SP Sport Maxx GT DSST served as the original equipment tire for select BMW models including the X5 and 6-series. Features run flat technology.
Strengths and weaknesses?
Decent dry and wet traction characteristics as compared to max performance competition.
Ride quality, road noise, and limited treadlife are the primary points against the SP Sport Maxx GT DSST.
How does the SP Sport Maxx GT DSST compare?
It's the best max performance summer run flat currently on offer from Dunlop, but it still ranks just ninth out of thirteen tires in the category. By and large users have been very dissatisfied with the treadlife, ride quality, and road noise (especially as the miles add up).
Anything else to know?
We question the advisability and value of max performance summer run flat tires, but if that's your thing you can do better than the SP Sport Maxx GT DSST -- from performance, comfort, and value perspectives. For a max performance run flat alternative, consider the Bridgestone Potenza RE050A Pole Position RFT.
But we have to ask... sure you don't want to defect from run flats? If you're loyal to Dunlop, consider the (non-run flat) Dunlop SP Sport Maxx GT. Superior performance, superior comfort and treadlife, and notably less expensive. The excellent Michelin Pilot Super Sport and Bridgestone Potenza S-04 Pole Position are also worthy of consideration, if you can live without the run flat technology.
