Dunlop SP10 review
What is it?
The Dunlop SP10 is a passenger all season tire designed for original equipment use on the Toyota Prius (first generation). The SP10 has also been implemented as the original equipment tire on other small, efficient vehicles the Honda Fit and Toyota Yaris. Strengths and weaknesses? The SP10 aims for efficiency and economy over outright performance, and so performance expectations should be muted. Dry and wet condition capabilities are in step with the limited performance of the eco-vehicles that use it. However, when marketed and sold as an all season tire, winter/snow performance has to be there. According to the data and many users who endure true winters, the SP10 is simply not up to the task. How does the Dunlop SP10 compare? Direct comparative data is lacking. For the money, we'd suggest that there are superior alternatives worth considering (see below).
Anything else to know?
The Dunlop SP10 is available in very limited sizes due to the intended OE applications. The SP10 is still priced like it's current technology, and as if there are no alternatives. Thankfully that's not the case -- For equal money check out the objectively superior Michelin Defender, which is also a low rolling resistance tire. The General Tire Altimax RT43 (T-Speed Rated) is a less expensive option, with excellent all around performance. (You may sacrifice some on efficiency/fuel economy with this option, but it's also about $30 less per tire, so notably less initial cost.) Had enough of marginal all season performance, and willing to forego some efficiency in the interest of certain performance? The Continental TrueContact can't be beat. For a little extra motivation to shop around, note that the Dunlop SP10 offers no treadlife warranty, which is just one more sign that it's obsolete. Before you buy...
