The buzz surrounding the C7 Z06 since its release earlier this year hasn't been resoundingly positive. Motor Trend had a hard time extracting its full performance in a comparison test. And there have been quite a few reports of overheating at the track as well, which has discouraged some owners and caused premature resales.
Finally though, the Z06 delivered the goods at this year's Car & Driver Lightning Lap at VIR.
The VIR lap time of 2:44.6 puts the Z06 second all time among Lightning Lap contestants, and just 1.5 seconds shy of the Porsche 918 Spyder time set last year. In terms of this year's contenders, the McLaren 650S Spider came closest to the Z06 with a time of 2:45.8. The Porsche 911 GT3 (non-RS) was some 6 seconds off the Z06 pace with a 2:50.4.*
To add to the story, Jim Mero (GM test driver) indicates that he's gone as fast as 2:41.3 in private Z06 testing at VIR.
For all of the details on the Z06's track triumph, buy the latest Car & Driver, or grab a copy and find a chair at your local bookstore like a normal person.
*For all of you Porschephiles out there: the 991 GT3 went 5.5 seconds faster than the old 997.2 GT3 RS. Remarkable.
